What is Whey Protein?▾

Whey protein is a high-quality protein that comes from milk. During the cheese-making process, the liquid portion of milk (called whey) is separated and then filtered and dried to create whey protein powder. NZ Muscle Whey Protein uses whey sourced from Fonterra.

Whey protein contains all nine essential amino acids and is quickly absorbed by the body, making it one of the most popular protein sources for people who exercise, train regularly, or want an easy way to increase their daily protein intake.

When should I take whey protein?▾

Protein powder is best taken within 1–2 hours after a workout to maximize muscle recovery, often called the "anabolic window". However, total daily protein intake is more important for muscle growth than precise timing. It can also be consumed in the morning to break the overnight fast or before bed for sustained repair.

Key Times to Take Protein Powder:

  • Post-Workout (Best): Consuming 15–30g of protein within 60 minutes to 2 hours after training helps repair and rebuild muscle tissue.
  • Morning: Taking protein at breakfast helps increase satiety (fullness) and kickstarts metabolism.
  • Before Bed: Casein protein, specifically, is ideal before bed to provide a slow release of amino acids for muscle repair during sleep.
  • Throughout the Day: If you are not meeting your protein needs through whole foods, using a shake as a snack helps maintain daily intake, which is crucial for overall muscle maintenance and weight loss.
How do I use Whey Protein?▾

Shake: Add 1 scoop in a shaker with 250 - 350 mL of cold water or milk and shake well for a quick protein shake when you’re on-the-go or in the gym.

Smoothie: Add 1 - 2 scoops in a blender with your favourite fruit and ice.

Snack: Add 1 - 2 scoops into yoghurt or oats for a delicious snack.

NZ Muscle Whey Protein is 100% whey protein, including whey isolate, micro-ultra filtered whey concentrate, gluten free (except double choc cookie) and whey peptides. Each serving provides 24 grams of protein to help with lean muscle growth.
If you are on a low carb diet, NZ Muscle Whey Protein is a perfect choice! Each serving has only 4 grams of carbs, 2.5 grams of fat and a whooping 24 grams of NZ grass fed protein (some variation depending on flavours)!

Whey concentrate Vs Isolate

Both whey concentrate and whey isolate are high-quality protein sources derived from whey, but they differ slightly in processing and nutritional profile.

Whey Concentrate is the more minimally processed form. It typically contains around 70–80% protein, with small amounts of carbohydrates and fats remaining. This gives it a creamier texture and richer flavour, making it a popular choice for everyday protein shakes, smoothies, and recipes.

Doesn't mix well- but tastes okay

"The chocolate flavour is okay and it's drinkable on its own, but I wasn't overly impressed. The biggest downside for me was the mixability — it tends to stay a bit lumpy and doesn't blend as smoothly as other protein powders I've tried. I also found it didn't work well in recipes. When added to overnight oats, the flavour and texture weren't great, and it left a slightly artificial aftertaste. I've definitely used other protein powders that mix better and taste much nicer in both shakes and food. Overall, it's decent if you're just having it as a basic shake, but there are better options available for taste, texture, and versatility."
